Research in Motion vs. Palm - A Comparison
RIM Dominates Corporate Smart Phone Market
July 29, 2008
Research in Motion (RIMM) has been the dominant manufacturer in ChangeWave corporate smart phone surveys dating back to February 2007. At that time, we reported: "Among respondents whose companies currently provide Smart Phones, RIM (61%) remains the clear industry leader. Thirty-four percent (34%) of their users report their company is Very Satisfied with their Blackberries - with an 89% Satisfaction Rating overall."
Subsequent ChangeWave smart phone surveys continued to track RIM's momentum.
Below is a comparison of our ChangeWave RIM survey data from February 2007 through June 2008 with actual RIM revenue as reported by the company itself.

ChangeWave RIM Corporate Smart Phone Results vs. Actual RIM Revenue

In an upcoming ChangeWave report, we'll take a close-up look at the potential consumer demand for RIM's three new phone offerings - the Bold, Thunder and Kickstart - as they aim to counterattack the new Apple 3G iPhone among consumers.
Palm Suffers Numerous Blows
Even as RIM rose, Palm (PALM) has been in the midst of a multi-year freefall.
Back in Feb 2007, we also found that "Our current results look particularly troublesome for Palm (22%)...which appears to be facing a shrinking corporate buying environment. Palm also doesn't fare as well regarding corporate satisfaction...only 22% of their users say their company is Very Satisfied with their Treos."
Subsequent ChangeWave surveys continued to track Palm's demise.
Below is our ChangeWave survey data on Palm from February 2007 through June 2008 compared with actual Palm revenue as reported by the company itself.

THERE IS NO REAL COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TWO COMPANIES. RIMM IS CLEARLY THE BEST.

Jim,
We actually have comparatives on RIM vs. Windows Mobile.
In our Mar '08 and Jun '08 Consumer Telecom survey, we asked respondents who planned on buying a Smart Phone in the next 90 days the following.
"Which mobile OS (Operating System) would you prefer to have on the Smart Phone you plan on buying?"
The results are as follows:
RIM OS (Mar '08: 24%, Jun '08 17%: -7 pts)
Windows Mobile (Mar '08:20%, Jun '08: 12%: -8 pts)
OS X (Mar '08: 23%, Jun '08: 43%: +20pts)
